Frequently Asked Questions About South Korea Moves

We suggest taking your move from Korea to Hawaiʻi step by step. Start by deciding which belongings you wish to take with you. Then, you’ll need to arrange to ship them to Hawaiʻi, clear U.S. customs on arrival, and coordinate final delivery on your island of choice: Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi or the Big Island.

Because of the distance and the international logistics, we recommend working with a professional moving company to handle the transportation of your household belongings from South Korea to Hawaiʻi.

Door-to-door shipping times can vary based on availability, ocean freight schedules, and customs clearance timelines, but 8-10 weeks is a good ballpark for Korea–Hawaiʻi moves. When you reach out for a complimentary quote, our team can estimate an approximate timeline for your move, based on your exact origin and destination points. Once your relocation is booked, you’ll get a more specific window for the arrival of your household goods.

Both South Korea (or the Republic of Korea, as it’s officially known) and the U.S. offer pathways for duty-free clearance of household goods. Work closely with your moving company to assemble the correct paperwork so your items can clear customs duty free.

Before you pack your household goods, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the restricted and prohibited items of your destination country to avoid any customs issues. You can find more information in our article about moving between Korea and Hawaiʻi.

The cost of moving household goods internationally depends on several factors, including how much you ship, the services you select, and the exact origin and destination of your shipment.

We suggest getting three, independent quotes from professional moving companies to give yourself a good lay of the land for the cost of your Korea–Hawaiʻi move. Request your complimentary quote today from our team.

While you can pack your own household goods for an international move, we don’t recommend it. Any boxes that were packed by owner (PBO) are marked as such for customs purposes. This can present a red flag during customs clearance, since there’s no third-party verification of the contents. Shipments with PBO boxes can be subject to more frequent inspections, which come with a bill that you’ll be expected to pay.

When you move with us, our team will pick up your shipment once it arrives at the port in Hawaiʻi. We’ll bring it back to our warehouse so we can schedule final delivery at a convenient time for you. If you aren’t yet in Hawaiʻi—or your house isn’t quite ready to receive your belongings—we can arrange to store your shipment and deliver it at a later date.

Yes! We carefully vet and partner with only the best local movers in South Korea to provide a high-quality moving experience from start to finish. Our team works closely with our partners in Korea to ensure a seamless relocation. We can even deliver packing and unpacking services on both ends of your move.

U.S. citizens can visit South Korea for up to 90 days without a visa. Longer stays will require a visa. Visit the Korea Visa Portal to see the available visa categories, which include student visas, professional visas, intra-company transfer visas, and international trade visas. You’ll also need to apply for an Alien Registration Card on arrival. You’ll find more information on documentation at hikorea.go.kr.

If you’re an American moving to Korea, we’ve got a few cultural notes to help you fit in more quickly—and avoid offending anyone:

  • Adjust your volume – Americans tend to talk louder in public places than Koreans. It’s considered polite to keep the volume of your conversations low.
  • Don’t go in for the hug immediately – Casual physical contact is less common in Korea than in the U.S. Instead, consider a slight bow or a nod as a greeting.
  • Use two handsWhen accepting something from another person, such as a drink or money, do it with two hands.

One cultural similarity you’ll appreciate if you’re moving from Hawaiʻi: In Korea, it’s considered polite to remove your shoes before entering someone’s home. That’s one habit from Hawaiʻi that will translate well to your new life in Korea.
